About Nassau, Bahamas

Nassau is the capital and commercial center of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas on the island of New Providence. The city is home to more than 248,000 people, who make up 70% of the entire population in the Bahamas. It was named in honor of William of Orange-Nassau. The growth of the modern-day Nassau began with the influx American Loyalists and slaves during the late 18th century. Historically, Nassau was considered a stronghold for pirates but Nassau today is celebrated as one of the most popular port cities for cruise ships in the Caribbean.

Looking for activities once your private jet arrives in Nassau? Nassau has no lack of sandy beaches, glitzy-themed resorts as well as premier shopping malls. Despite its modern development, the colonial charm of Nassau is still evident in its old forts and colonial buildings. Here are some of the top attractions here:

Paradise Island

Paradise Island

Paradise Island: Formerly known as Hog Island, Paradise Island is home to several private homes, a golf course and several resorts including the massive Atlantis Resort. The island is long and runs parallel to the northern edge of the New Providence Island. The lighthouse at the western end of Paradise Island dates back to 1817 and marks the harbor’s entrance.

Cable Beach: This beach gained its name because the submarine telegraph first came ashore here. Despite the dozens of resorts that line this coastline, Cable Beach still manages to deliver the feel of a private Caribbean vacation with turquoise waters and soft, white sand. Popular resorts located at Cable Beach include Sandals Royal Bahamian, Wyndham Nassau Resort and Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort.

Blue Lagoon Island

Blue Lagoon Island

Blue Lagoon Island: It is a private island located 3 miles away from the city and is also known as Salt Cay. Here, the Dolphin Encounters is a three-acre marine mammal facility where visitors can learn all there is to know about any marine mammals.

National Art Gallery of The Bahamas: This is the most important art gallery nationwide and is housed inside the lovely Villa Doyle. The oldest section of the gallery overlooks the harbor and was built by William Doyle in the late 1860s. The southern wing was built by Sir Walter K. Moore in the 1920s. Impressive collections of the National Art Gallery of Bahamas include ceramics, paintings, textiles, sculptures and paintings.

Queen’s Staircase: This staircase is made up of 66 steps, all of which were cut from solid limestone. More than a century after it was built, it was named to honor Queen Victoria’s role in abolishing the slave trade in the country.
