About the Hamptons, New York

Many affluent NYC residents call the Hamptons their home for the summer. This string of seaside communities is located on Eastern Long Island’s South Fork. Estates lie hidden behind towering hedges of boxwood, 18th-century shingled buildings populate the interior villages, towns, farms, and of course, there are beaches – lots of them. Lavish parties are not uncommon in this elite vacation spot. Each town in the Hamptons has its own specifically listed population and square mileage, the largest being Water Mill at 12.5 square miles with a population of approximately 1725. The largest population for an area, however, is Southampton, with a population of roughly 3150 people (in an area measuring only 6.8 square miles).

Parrish Art Museum: The focus of this art museum is Long Island’s East End. Permanent collection installations include Drawn in Black and White, Fairfield Porter, and Materiality and Process; current collections include Roy Lichtenstein’s Tokyo Brushstroke l and ll, Jonah Bokaer’s Platform, and a display simply titled Artists Choose Artists. The museum moved from Southampton Village back in 2012 and is currently located in Watermill, New York. Still, Parrish Art Museum remains inspired by the artistic life and natural setting of Long Island’s East End.

Hook Windmill: This mill operated regularly until 1908, which is impressive considering that it was built back in 1806. Of all the windmills on Long Island, this is the most complete. The mill itself is actually owned by the Town of East Hampton; it was purchased back in 1922. This historic landmark is located in East Hampton’s N. Main St. and also goes by the name Old Hook Mill. Gardiner Mill and Pantigo Mill are other mills in the area, but they have not withstood the test of time quite like Old Hook Mill. Regardless, all the mills represent the best and most impressive elements of Wooden Age American craftsmanship.

Pollock – Krasner House and Study Center: Commonly referred to as The Pollock- Krasner House and Studio, this East Hampton building was originally occupied by Jackson Pollock and his wife, who purchased the home back in November 1945 for a mere $5000. There is a barn nearby (which, in order to improve the view from the house, was actually moved) located on Accabonac Creek. The wood-framed house and surrounding property lies on approximately 1.53 acres. Both Krasner and Pollock used upstairs bedrooms as their individual studios, though Krasner moved her studio to the barn after Pollock’s death.

Cedar Point County Park: Suffolk County’s government owns this East Hampton park, which occupies 607-acres. Famous for the decommissioned lighthouse, built in 1839, Cedar Point County Park has some of the best views of Gardiner’s Bay. The lighthouse, which stands 40 feet tall,was replaced with a steel skeleton at breakwater after being decommissioned in 1934. The lighthouse is now connected to the mainland via a narrow but walkable strip of land, courtesy of the 1938 New England Hurricane.

• LaGuardia Airport (LGA): La Guardia Airport is located 86 miles from the Hamptons in New York. It is located in the Northern Part of New York City in Queens borough. This is one of the largest airports in the world, and is the third busiest serving New York City. La Guardia Airport covers an area of 280 hectares and sits at an elevation of 21 feet above sea level. La Guardia Airport is a hub for American Airlines as well as Delta Airlines, and serves many other local and domestic ones as well. La Guardia Airport has two asphalt/concrete runways measuring 7,000 feet in length each, and designated in the 04/22 and 13/31 directions respectively. It also has two asphalt helipads which are 60 feet long.
• Francis S. Gabreski Airport (FOK): This airport is located  19 miles from the Hamptons. It was initially designed to be a military airport in 1969, but is currently open to the public and is in use by chartered and private jets. The airport sits at an elevation of 67 feet above sea level and has three runways. Two of these are asphalt/concrete runways measuring 9,000 feet in length and designated in the 6/24 and 1/19 directions respectively. It also has a 5000-foot asphalt runway designated in the 15/33 direction.
• Mattituck Airport (21N): This public airport is located one mile southeast of the Mattituck CBD, an 28 miles from the Hamptons. The airport covers an area of 7.4 hectares and has a relatively decent décor. It stands at an elevation of 30 feet above sea level and has a single asphalt runway measuring 2,200 feet in length. The runway is designated in the 1/19 direction. Mattituck Airport records an average of 12,000 aircraft movements annually, and is the permanent base for 32 aircraft.
• Lufker Airport (49N): Initially a private airport, Lufker Airport  is now a public facility mostly used by chartered aircraft and private jets. The airport is located 25 miles from the Hamptons and covers an area of 12 hectares. Lufker Airport stands at an elevation of 57 feet above sea level. Its single turf runway measures 2300 feet In length and is designed for use by light aircraft and crafts such as gliders. The airport records about 2,500 aircraft operations annually
• Montauk Airport (MTP): Montauk Airport is a privately owned and publicly used airport located 29 miles away from the Hamptons. It is located in the Suffolk County of New York. Montauk Airport sits at an elevation of seven feet above sea level and has asphalt runway measuring 3,200 feet in length, and designated in the 6/21 direction. The airport records an average of 30,000 aircraft operations annually.
• East Hampton Airport (HTO): East Hampton Airport is located nine miles away from the Hamptons. The public use airport stands at an elevation of 55 feet above sea level and has two asphalt runways measuring 4,200 miles and 2,000 miles in length respectively. These are designated in the 10/28 and 16/34 directions. The airport records an average of 31,000 aircraft operations annually.
