About Bridgetown, Barbados

Barbados’ largest and capital city is Bridgetown. With a population of 110, 000 people covering only 15 square miles, this city packs a lot of energy into a tight space. The economy revolves mostly around molasses, rum, and sugar exports. The offshore sector and tourism also largely factor into Bridgetown’s economic strength. The city’s Deep Water Harbor, or Bridgetown Port, is the major port for entry for Barbados docking cargo and cruise ships.

Popular Destinations in Bridgetown

Looking for activities once your private jet arrives in Bridgetown? Bridgetown offers a huge variety of interesting tourist attractions. Some of the most popular ones include:

Carlisle Bay

Carlisle Bay

Carlisle Bay: An abundance of marine animals, six shipwrecks, and calm waters make this beach the perfect place for snorkelers. Sit and relax in the lounge chairs for rent (umbrellas and towels also available), horseback ride, or rent water sports equipment including jet skis and kayaks. The guards on duty protect the Bay as well as the nearby restaurants and dive shops.

Harrison’s Cave: Calcite deposits such as stalagmites and stalactites, as well as several streams, decorate these natural wonders. Superb tour guides lead visitors through the wondrous beauty in this highly-touted attraction. Special “bat focused” tours for children are also available. Be sure to bring something with which to take pictures (you will likely need a flash for some pictures).

Mount Gay Visitor Center: The Mount Gay Visitor Center offers a detailed look into rum production and its exporting process. Free samples at the end of the tour are a real treat, which many are sure to take advantage of after their lunching experience. A variety of different types of rum are offered both during the tour and afterward for sampling.

St. Nicholas Abbey

St. Nicholas Abbey

St. Nicholas Abbey: Coincidentally, rum is produced at St. Nicholas Abbey as well. The rum produced here is done so in much smaller amounts (understandably so, as it is an Abbey) and it is done so in a traditional method. Although alcohol is exciting, many say that the real draw here is the Abbey itself. Featured attractions include multiple orchards and gardens, a 350-year-old plantation (complete with historic significance, museum, antiques, and unique architecture), and more rum tasting. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, visitors can watch sugar cane’s grinding process right on site.

Barbados Boardwalk: The Barbados Boardwalk connects the Camelot and Accra beaches. The best time to visit is either during sunrise or in the evening, during sunset. In addition to its impeccable views and impressive cleanliness, Barbados Boardwalk is full of crabs, turtles, and other aquatic life. Several bars and restaurants are nearby, scattered along the mile-long walkway.

Hunte’s Gardens: Plants are only one part of the attraction here. In addition to greenery, animals such as the owner’s dog, monkeys, and hummingbirds provide entertainment. Visitors usually allow themselves ample time to enjoy all the gardens have to offer in a more relaxed atmosphere.

Animal Flower Cave: The Animal Flower Cave is the ideal spot for avid explorers. Although the hike makes it slightly difficult to access, visiting the cave is well worth it.
