Popular Destinations in Lisbon

Looking for activities once your private jet arrives in Lisbon? Rich with culture and heritage, Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world. Some of its major attractions include the following:

Lisbon Cathedral in Alfana

Lisbon Cathedral in Alfana

Alfama: The oldest neighborhood in Lisbon is Alfama, which is home to numerous historical landmarks and Fado bars. Some of the attractions in Alfama include the Castle of São Jorge, the miradouros (terraces) of the city – which are great lookout points – and the Lisbon Cathedral. Visitors can soak in the historical culture or listen to Fado music: traditional Portuguese music with a strong theme of destiny and fate.

Castelo de São Jorge: The Castelo de São Jorge, or the Castle of São Jorge, is a commanding castle of Moorish origins. Dating back to the second to sixth centuries BC, the Castle used to be a site of fortifications, and later a royal residence, but today offers some of the best views of the city. Even though the 1755 Lisbon earthquake caused considerable damage to the Castle, massive restoration efforts have preserved many of the Castle’s structures, and the Castle remains a major tourist attraction to this day.

Lisbon Oceanarium

Lisbon Oceanarium

Oceanario de Lisboa: The largest indoor aquarium in Europe, the Oceanario de Lisboa, or the Lisbon Oceanarium, is a popular attraction. Opened to the public in 1998, the Lisbon Oceanarium was designed by Peter Chermayeff, who also designed the world-renowned Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan in Japan. It is home to a massive 180,000 cubic feet tank that houses sharks, rays and eels. In addition, the Lisbon Oceanarium is one of the very few aquariums in the entire world to host a sunfish, due to the demanding nature of keeping a sunfish in captivity.

Mosteiro dos Jerónimos: The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, or the Jerónimos Monastery, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the finest examples of the Late Gothic Manueline architectural style. Located in Santa Maria de Belém, the Jerónimos Monastery was completed in 1601, and its design incorporated many maritime and naval motifs that came to be known as the Manueline style. The Monastery is notable for being the site where the Treaty of Lisbon, an important European Union agreement, was signed in 2007.

Belém Tower: Together with the neighboring Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower, or the Tower of St Vincent, was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The Tower played an important role in the maritime discoveries of Portuguese explorers during the Age of Discovery in the early 15th century.
